La Congresul International al Matematicienilor de la Madrid, august 2006, lui G. Perelman i s-a oferit medalia Fields (un premiu analog premiului Nobel, care nu exista pentru domeniul matematicilor).

Conjectura lui Poincaré: Daca o varietate M³, neteda, compacta, de dimensiune 3, are proprietatea ca orice curba simpla închisa situata în aceasta varietate poate fi deformata continuu la un punct, rezulta ca M³ este homeomorfa cu o sfera.

O explicatie: "Intuitiv, putem sa ne imaginam procesul realizat cu un lasou lansat de un paznic de vite. Când acest lasou nu prinde gâtul niciunei vite, el se strânge înapoi în mâna paznicului. Când lasoul prinde o vita (sau un ciot de copac), a întâlnit o singularitate (o gaura)¸ si paznicul este nevoit sa deschid˘a lasoul (adica sa renunte la continuitate) ca sa-l poata desprinde."
